What is a medical assistant?
A medical assistant is a person who has been trained to perform administrative and clinical tasks in a medical office. Medical assistants are vital members of any healthcare team, providing support to both doctors and patients.
The duties of a medical assistant may vary depending on the size and type of medical practice, but generally include greeting patients, scheduling appointments, taking patient histories and vital signs, preparing patients for examination, assisting the doctor during examinations, and performing basic laboratory tests. In addition, Medical Assistants may also be responsible for handling insurance paperwork and billing.
The duties of a medical assistant

The salary of a medical assistant
The median annual wage for medical assistants was $34,800 in May 2019. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $24,620, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $49,180.
The skills you need to be a successful medical assistant
The medical assistant program at STVT will provide you with the skills you need to be a successful medical assistant. The program curriculum includes Medical Terminology anatomy and physiology, administrative medical office procedures, and clinical procedures. Upon completion of the program, you will be prepared to take the Certified Medical Assistant Exam.
The medical assistant certification process
The first step in becoming a certified medical assistant is to graduate from an accredited program. The STVT Medical Assistant Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Once you have successfully completed an accredited Medical Assistant program, you will then need to pass the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

STVT’s Medical Assistant Program provides students with the opportunity to gain real-world experience through an externship. This allows students to put their skills to use in a real medical setting and gives them a better understanding of what it’s like to work as a medical assistant.
