The programs consist of classroom instruction, as well as lab and clinical experience. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the certification exam offered by the National Healthcare Association. Upon passing the exam, they will be awarded the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential.

What You Will Learn in a West Mec Medical Assisting Program

At West-Mec, we offer two different types of medical assisting programs: a diploma program and an associate’s degree program. Both programs will give you the skills and knowledge you need to work as a medical assistant, but the associate’s degree program will also give you a foundation in liberal arts coursework.

The curriculum for both the diploma and associate’s degree programs includes classes such as medical law and ethics, anatomy and physiology, human diseases, Medical Terminology pharmacology, first aid, and CPR. You will also take courses specific to medical assisting, such as administrative office procedures, insurance billing and coding, scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records taking patient vital signs, performing basic laboratory tests, and giving injections.

In addition to your coursework, you will also complete externships in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
