The program is approved by the California Department of Public Health and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

The program curriculum includes coursework in Medical Terminology anatomy and physiology, medical office procedures, administrative procedures, clinical procedures, and externship. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam.

The Program Requirements

You must also take and pass a criminal background check, as well as a drug test. The Program Schedule

The SMC medical assistant program is a full-time, day program that runs for ten months. The program schedule is as follows:

-The first eight weeks of the program are dedicated to didactic coursework, labs, and clinical simulations.
-The next six weeks are spent in an externship, during which students gain real-world experience in a medical office setting.
-After the externship, students return to campus for two additional weeks of coursework and labs.

In total, the program requires ten months to complete.

The Program Costs

The cost of the SMC medical assistant program is $12,495. This includes all tuition, fees, and books. Payment plans are available, and financial aid is available for those who qualify.

The Program Curriculum

The Program Admissions

In order to be eligible for the SMC Medical Assistant Program, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as complete our pre-admission exam with a score of 80% or higher.

The pre-admission exam covers math, reading comprehension, and basic grammar. If you do not pass the pre-admission exam, you may retake it one time. If you do not pass the exam after the second attempt, you will need to wait one year before reapplying to the program.

Once you have passed the pre-admission exam, you will need to complete an application form and submit it to the SMC Admissions office. The application form can be found on our website or in person at the Admissions office.

After your application has been received and reviewed, you will be contacted for an interview. The interview is an opportunity for us to get to know you and for you to ask any questions that you may have about the program.

If you are offered a position in the program, you will be required to complete a criminal background check and drug screen. You must also have health insurance that meets the requirements of the program.

The Program Outcomes

The SMC Medical Assistant Program has a long-standing reputation for providing quality training to its students. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam.

The program is divided into two parts: the didactic portion and the clinical portion. The didactic portion of the program is comprised of online coursework that students must complete before beginning their externship. The online courses cover topics such as medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, medical office procedures, and insurance billing and coding.

The clinical portion of the program consists of an externship at a medical facility where students will gain hands-on experience performing the duties of a medical assistant. Upon successful completion of both the didactic and clinical portions of the program, students will be awarded a certificate of completion from SMC.
