Objective

An objective statement is no longer considered a necessity on a medical assistant resume—instead, you should use a career summary to introduce yourself to hiring managers. A career summary is a concise overview of your skills and experience that makes you look like the perfect candidate for the job. Think of it as your elevator pitch—you have a very limited amount of time and space to make an impression, so make it count!

Skills

As a medical assistant you will be performing both administrative and clinical duties, so it is important to list both types of skills on your resume. Administrative medical assistant skills would include: managing medical records scheduling appointments, handling billing and insurance, and greeting patients. Clinical medical assistant skills would include: taking patient vital signs, updating patient medical histories, performing urine tests and laboratory tests, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination.

In addition to listing your skills, you should also include any relevant experience you have in the medical field. This could include internships, externships, volunteer work, or paid work. If you have any relevant certifications or licenses, be sure to list those as well.

Education

Include your education in your medical assistant resume, even if you have not yet completed a formal medical assistant program. If you have taken any college-level courses related to medical assisting, list them along with the name and location of the school, the dates you attended, and the degree or certificate you earned.

If you are a recent high school graduate or have not yet completed any medical assistant courses, list your high school education in your resume. Include the name and location of the school, the dates you attended, and any academic awards or recognition you received.

Certification

Most employers prefer to hire candidates who have completed a medical assistant training program and received certification from an accredited institution. Be sure to include your certification on your resume, along with the name and contact information for the certifying organization. If you have not yet completed your certification, you can still list your medical assistant training on your resume, along with the expected date of completion.

Experience

Include your experience in your medical assistant resume. This can include any paid or volunteer positions that you have held in the medical field. Employers will want to see that you have the necessary skills and experience to perform the tasks of a medical assistant. Be sure to list your job duties and any special training or certifications that you have received. If you have any relevant experience outside of the medical field, you can include that as well. For example, if you have worked as a customer service representative, you can list transferable skills such as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Clinical Experience

Prospective employers will want to know about your clinical experience, so be sure to include this information in your resume. Start by listing the name and location of each facility where you have worked, as well as the dates of employment. Then, use bullet points to highlight the duties you performed at each facility.

When describing your clinical experience, focus on the skills and knowledge you gained that will help you in your future career as a medical assistant. For example, if you have experience taking medical histories and performing physical exams, be sure to mention this. If you have experience working with electronic Medical records (EMR) systems, mention this as well. Employers will want to know about any special skills or training you have that will help you in the medical assistant role.

Administrative Experience

When listing your administrative experience on your medical assistant resume, be sure to include any roles in which you provided direct patient care, as well as those in which you managed office operations. If you have experience with billing, coding, or insurance paperwork, be sure to highlight that as well. Any experience you have with customer service or working in a fast-paced environment will also be valuable to potential employers.

Computer Skills

As a medical assistant, you will be using computers for a variety of tasks, from handling insurance claims to maintaining patient records. Be sure to list any relevant computer skills you have in your resume, including your competence with specific software programs. Here are some examples of computer skills you might mention:

-Typing speed
-Data entry
-Software proficiency (for example, Microsoft Office or electronic health records)
-Keyboarding
-10-key calculator
-Scanning and faxing

Personal Skills

Include a Skills section in your medical assistant resume to list your top abilities related to the job. Review the job posting to identify the desired skills for the role and include these in your resume. Also, consider using some of the key terms from the job posting in this section, as employers will be scanning resumes for these terms as well.

Some examples of personal skills that would be beneficial for a medical assistant to have include:
-Strong communication skills
-Excellent customer service skills
-Detail oriented
-Ability to multitask
-Ability to work well under pressure
-Strong organizational skills
