The Certified medical assistant (CMA) credential is nationally recognized and signifies that an individual has completed an accredited training program and passed a standardized exam. The CMA certification is granted by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical assistants (AAMA).

The Exam Format
The format of the CMA (AAMA) exam is changing in 2021. The new exam will have 200 multiple-choice questions, with 150 scored items and 50 pretest items. The passing score is still 500 out of 800 possible points. The examination is divided into five sections:
-general knowledge (20%)
-administrative procedures (40%)
-clinical procedures (40%)
Each section has a set time limit, and you must complete the sections in order. You will have 3 hours and 45 minutes to finish the exam.

Introduction
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential is awarded by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). To earn the credential, individuals must successfully complete an accredited medical assisting program and pass a national Certification Exam administered by the Certifying Board of the AAMA.
The CMA Exam consists of two parts: a computer-based provincially regulated multiple-choice component and a practical or hands-on component. The computer-based portion contains 200 questions, including 20 pilot questions that are not scored. The practical or hands-on component is a skills demonstration that is conducted in front of a certified evaluator. In order to sit for the examination, candidates must first apply to their provincial regulatory body and pay the required fee.
The CMA Exam covers five content areas: General (20%), Administrative (30%), Clinical (30%), Infection Control (10%), and Professionalism (10%). Candidates are allotted four hours to complete both parts of the examination.
The passing score for the CMA Exam is 250 out of 400 possible points. A passing score on both the computer-based and practical/hands-on components is required to earn the credential.
The Exam Format
The CMA (AAMA)computer-based exam—offered year-round by appointment, Monday through Saturday (excluding holidays)—consists of 200 scored items and 25 pretest items. Of the total 225 items, 150 are scored questions and 75 are non–scored pretest questions that do not affect a candidate’s score. Candidates will have three hours to complete the examination, which includes a 15-minute tutorial and a 10-minute break. Candidates are strongly encouraged to take the break.

The CMA (AAMA) Exam is computer-based and consists of 200 multiple-choice questions. Of the 200 questions, 170 are scored and 30 are unscored. The170 scored questions are divided into three sections: General, Administrative, and Clinical.
You will have three hours to complete the examination. The time limit for each section is as follows:
-General – 30 minutes
-Administrative – 60 minutes
-Clinical – 90 minutes
You will be given a short break after each section.
