Rhode Island’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team – Overview

The Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) is a component of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) and is one of the Federal Responder Groups that make up the National Response Framework. DMATs provide medical care to victims of natural and manmade disasters and other emergencies.

The DMAT program was established in 1988 in response to Hurricane Hugo. Since then, DMATs have responded to more than 400 declared disasters, including hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, mudslides, wildfires, and terrorist attacks.

DMATs are composed of medical and public health professionals who volunteer their time and skills to assist in disaster response efforts. DMAT members include physicians, nurses, pharmacists, mental health professionals, dentists, medical assistants, paramedics, and other support personnel.

DMATs are organized into regional teams that are deployable within 12 hours of notification. Each team has its own equipment and supplies, which are stored in secure locations around the country. DMATs can be deployed for up to 14 days at a time and can provide medical care to more than 3,000 patients per day.

In addition to providing direct patient care, DMATs also provide support to local hospitals and other health care facilities in the affected area. DMATs can set upfield hospitals to relieve overcrowding at local hospitals or provide medical care in areas where hospital infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed. DMATs also have the ability to decontaminate patients who have been exposed to hazardous materials.
