Georgetown University’s School of Medicine has appointed a new Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing. Dr. Pamela Jeffries will assume the role on July 1st, 2018.

Georgetown University Appoints New Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing
Georgetown University has announced the appointment of Dr. Kimberly J. Peacock as the new Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing. Dr. Peacock will begin her new position on August 1, 2018.
Dr. Peacock received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2002 and completed her residency in psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital in 2006. She has been a faculty member at Georgetown since 2008, serving as Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry since 2012. In her new role, she will oversee a wide range of student support programs, including academic support, financial counseling, disability services, mental health services, and career counseling.
“I am thrilled to be taking on this new role at Georgetown,” said Dr. Peacock. “I am committed to ensuring that our students have the resources they need to succeed academically and personally.”
The appointment of Dr. Peacock comes at a time when mental health concerns are rising among college students nationwide. In 2016, a Georgetown task force found that one in four undergraduate students reported experiencing depression in the previous year. The university has taken steps to address the issue, including hiring additional mental health counselors and expanding its student support programs.
The Importance of Medical Student Support and Wellbeing
The Georgetown University School of Medicine has appointed a new Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing. In this role, Dr. Sara A. Vanopbroek will provide medical students with the support and resources they need to succeed both academically and personally.
Dr. Vanopbroek is a strong advocate for medical student wellbeing and has extensive experience working with students in various settings. She has served as an academic advisor, college counselor, and student support specialist at several institutions including the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Georgetown community and look forward to working with students to help them thrive during their time in medical school and beyond,” said Dr. Vanopbroek.

The Role of the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing
The Associate Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing is a position at Georgetown University’s School of Medicine. The person in this role is responsible for providing support and resources to medical students, as well as overseeing their wellbeing. This includes managing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The assistant dean also works with the school’s administration to create policies that promote student wellness.

We are proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Alex un Bloch as our new Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing. In this role, Dr. un Bloch will provide leadership and oversight for a wide range of student support services, including counseling, health promotion, academic support, and career development. He will also work closely with the Office of Student Affairs to ensure that our students have the resources they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Dr. un Bloch comes to us from the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as the Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services for Students in Health Professions. We are confident that he will be a valuable asset to our community and we look forward to working with him in this new capacity.
Meet the New Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing
Dr. Marcia Miller has been appointed as the new Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing at Georgetown University School of Medicine. In this role, Dr. Miller will provide guidance and support to students as they navigate their medical education.
Dr. Miller is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed her residency in Psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center She comes to Georgetown from the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, where she served as the Director of Student mental health Services and Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
“We are so fortunate to have Dr. Miller join our team,” said Steven Woolf, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education at Georgetown University School of Medicine. “She is a nationally recognized leader in medical student wellbeing and her experience will be invaluable in supporting our students.”
Dr. Miller will begin her new role at Georgetown on July 1, 2018.
What the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing Will Do
Georgetown University has announced the appointment of Dr. Katherine J. Walsh as the inaugural Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing, effective July 1, 2019. In this new role, Dr. Walsh will lead efforts to enhance the well-being of medical students and create a more supportive environment for all members of the Georgetown University School of Medicine community.
Reporting directly to Interim Dean for Medical Education Frederick P. Cerise, M.D., MPH, Dr. Walsh will work with students, faculty and staff across the school to identify and address factors that contribute to stress and burnout among medical students. She will also develop and oversee programs and policies related to medical student support and wellbeing, with a focus on prevention and early intervention. In addition, Dr. Walsh will serve as a resource for students who are struggling with personal or academic issues, connect them with campus resources as needed, and advocate on their behalf within the school
How the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing Will Help
Georgetown University’s School of Medicine has appointed Joanne P. Carney as the new Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing. In this role, Carney will provide guidance and support to medical students in all aspects of their wellbeing, including their physical, emotional, and mental health
Carney comes to Georgetown with a wealth of experience in student support and wellbeing. She most recently served as the Associate Director of Student Health and Counseling Services at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where she provided counseling and health services to medical students. Carney has also worked as a school psychologist, a college counselor, and a clinical psychologist in private practice.
“I am thrilled to be joining Georgetown University’s School of Medicine as the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing,” said Carney. “I look forward to working with students to help them thrive both academically and personally.”
The Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing’s Priorities
Prior to arriving at Georgetown, Dr. McLaughlin served as the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Health and Wellbeing at St. George’s University. In this role, she was responsible for overall student health and wellbeing, which included managing the infirmary, Health and Counseling Services, overseeing disability services and academic support, developing comprehensive health promotion initiatives, and leading crisis response efforts.
As the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. McLaughlin’s priorities will be to develop programs that support students’ physical and mental health and wellbeing; to create a thriving community of care that promotes inclusion, diversity, equity, and respect; and to foster a culture of hope, resiliency, and excellence.
The Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing’s Philosophy
Georgetown University’s new Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing, Dr. Julie Silver, is committed to supporting the whole student throughout their time at Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUSOM). According to Silver, “it is imperative that we pay attention to our students’ social, emotional, and physical wellbeing so they can thrive both in medical school and as future physicians.”
In her new role, Silver will oversee the implementation of GUSOM’s six-year longitudinal wellness curriculum. Additionally, she will serve as a resource for students who need support in managing stress and anxiety, developing positive coping mechanisms, resolving conflict, and navigating other challenges that may arise during their time in medical school.
Commenting on her appointment, Silver said that she is “honored to join such an amazing team of faculty and staff who are dedicated to supporting our students.” She added that she is “looking forward to working with everyone to create an even more supportive and inclusive environment at GUSOM.”
What Students Can Expect from the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Support and Wellbeing
Georgetown University has appointed a new assistant dean for medical student support and wellbeing. In this role, Dr. Janice C. SASS will work closely with students to help them succeed both academically and personally.
Dr. SASS has over 25 years of experience working with medical students and residents, as well as experience in Student Affairs administration. She most recently served as the Director of Student Affairs at Thomas Jefferson University’s College of Medicine, where she oversaw a wide variety of student support programs and services.
At Georgetown, Dr. SASS will be responsible for overseeing several key areas that impact medical students’ wellbeing, including academic support, personal counseling, financial aid advising, disability services, and diversity initiatives. She will also work with the Dean’s office to develop and implement policies and procedures that support students’ success.
Dr. SASS is committed to helping all students succeed and reach their full potential. “It is essential that we provide our students with the resources they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive environment,” she said. “I am looking forward to working with the Georgetown community to create a supportive environment that meets the needs of our varied student population.”
