Medical assistant certification exams are offered by a number of organizations. The most popular include the American Association of Medical assistants (AAMA), the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and the Certifying Board of the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

All three organizations offer multiple versions of their exams, with the AAMA and AMT each offering an entry-level exam as well as an advanced exam. The NHA offers four different versions of its exam, catering to those who want to specialize in a particular area such as phlebotomy or medical billing and coding.

The answer may surprise you. You can take the exam at any of hundreds of locations across the country, and even in some international locations. The best way to find a testing center near you is to use the search tool on the website of the certifying organization that you’ve chosen.

For example, if you’re seeking certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), you can use their Exam Site Locator tool. Simply enter your zip code and radius, and the site will provide a list of testing centers within that area. You can narrow your search further by selecting “computer-based testing” or “paper and pencil testing,” depending on your preferences.

The Certification Exam for Medical Assistants (CMA) is administered by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).’ To be eligible to take the CMA exam, candidates must have graduated from an accredited medical assisting program and completed a clinical externship within the past five years.

The CMA exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions that cover the following topics: general principles of patient care; administrative procedures; Medical Terminology physiology; human anatomy; pathology; infection control; safety and emergency procedures; pharmacology; and diagnostic testing and imaging.

The AAMA offers two ways to register for the CMA exam: online or by mail. To register online, visit the AAMA website and click on the “Register for Exam” button. To register by mail, download and complete the registration form found on the AAMA website and send it, along with your payment, to the address listed on the form.

The cost of taking the CMA exam is $175 for members of the AAMA and $300 for non-members. If you need to retake the exam, there is a $50 fee for members and a $125 fee for non-members.

Once you have registered for the exam, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to schedule your test date and time. The AAMA offers testing year-round at more than 300 Prometric testing centers across the United States.
