Introduction to the VCU medical assistant Program

The VCU medical assistant Program is a comprehensive program that preparing students for a career in the medical field. The program provides training in both the clinical and administrative aspects of medical assisting, and students will learn how to perform basic patient care tasks, take vital signs, prepare patients for examination, assist with minor surgical procedures, and more. In addition to the clinical training, students will also take coursework in medical office administration, which will prepare them to work in a variety of medical office settings.

What You Will Learn in the VCU Medical Assistant Program

In the VCU Medical Assistant Program, you will learn how to perform both administrative and clinical tasks in a medical office. You will receive training in Medical Terminology patient confidentiality, managing medical records scheduling appointments, coding and billing insurance claims, and taking patient vital signs. You will also have the opportunity to shadow a medical assistant in a real-world setting.

The VCU Medical Assistant Program Curriculum

The VCU Medical Assistant Program curriculum consists of 75 credit hours, which are divided into core requirements (55 credit hours) and general education requirements (20 credit hours). The core requirement courses include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical law and ethics, and clinical laboratory procedures. Students must also complete four externship rotations totaling 160 hours in order to graduate from the program.

In order to be eligible for the VCU Medical Assistant Program, students must have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as a minimum of 2.5 GPA in all college-level coursework.

The VCU School of Allied Health Professions is one of only four programs in Virginia to receive this dual accreditation.

The cost of the VCU Medical Assistant Program is $1,600 for Virginia residents and $2,400 for non-Virginia residents. The program includes tuition, room and board, books and materials, and a $100 fee for the Virginia Board of Medicine exam.

-A minimum of 73 credit hours including general education courses, medical assisting courses and clinical courses
-All general education, medical assisting and clinical courses with a C or better
-A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
-Achieve a passing score on the American Association of Medical Assistants’ (AAMA) Certifying Board (CCB) examination
