University of Houston’s Medical Assistant Program- An Overview
The University of Houston’s Medical Assistant Program is a two-year program that trains students to work as Medical assistants in a variety of healthcare settings. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and is comprised of didactic coursework, clinical rotations, and an externship.
Medical assistants perform both administrative and clinical tasks in healthcare settings such as doctors’ offices, hospitals, and clinics. They are responsible for greeting patients, scheduling appointments, taking medical histories, recording vital signs, and assisting with minor medical procedures. They may also perform basic lab tests, give injections, and prepare patients for x-rays and examinations.
Graduates of the University of Houston’s Medical Assistant Program are eligible to take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Upon passing the exam, graduates will be awarded the CMA credential and will be eligible to work as medical assistants in all 50 states.

The Program’s Facilities and Resources
The University of Houston’s Medical Assistant Program is located at the university’s Health and Biomedical Sciences Center. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
The program has four full-time faculty members, all of whom are certified medical assistants. In addition, there are two part-time faculty members who are certified medical assistants and one part-time faculty member who is a registered nurse.

The library has a collection of books, journals, and audio-visual materials that students can use for their coursework.
