The Curriculum of Aiken Technical College’s Medical Assistant Program
Aiken Technical College’s Medical Assistant Program curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of a medical assistant. The program includes coursework in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, administrative procedures, patient relations, and clinical procedures. In addition to classroom instruction, students in the program participate in laboratory and clinical experiences. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the Certified Medical Assistant Exam administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants
The Admission Requirements of Aiken Technical College’s Medical Assistant Program
Aiken Technical College’s (ATC) Medical Assistant Program is a diploma program that takes approximately two years to complete. The first year of the program focuses on medical assisting coursework, while the second year emphasizes clinical and externship experiences. Admission into Aiken Technical College’s Medical Assistant Program is competitive, and interested students must meet specific admission requirements in order to be considered for the program.
ATC’s Medical Assistant Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). In order to be accepted into the program, students must have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as complete specific prerequisite courses with a “C” or better. These courses include English Composition I, Introduction to Psychology, Fundamentals of Speech Communication, and Human Anatomy and Physiology I with a lab. In addition, all students must complete a criminal background check and drug screening prior to beginning the program.
Once all prerequisite coursework and admissions requirements have been met, students will be invited to participate in an interview with the Medical Assistant Program faculty. Interviews are conducted on a rolling basis until all spots in the class are filled. Students who are not selected for admission into the program may reapply for admission the following semester.
