Nait’s medical lab assistant program
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) offers a medical lab assistant program that is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work in a medical laboratory. The program combines classroom instruction with laboratory work and clinical experience. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification exam.

The program is designed to give students a solid foundation in medical science, while also providing them with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings.
The MLA program is an excellent choice for those who are interested in a career in healthcare, but who may not have the time or ability to commit to a four-year degree program. The MLA program can be completed in as little as two years, and provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in a healthcare setting. graduates of the MLA program have gone on to work in hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, and other healthcare settings.
The program curriculum
The program curriculum for the Medical Lab Assistant (MLA) diploma at Nait is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform as entry-level Medical laboratory assistants in hospitals and other medical laboratory settings. The program includes both classroom theory and laboratory practical components, with a focus on preparing students for real-world work experience.
During the first semester of the program, students will take courses that provide an overview of the medical laboratory industry, including topics such as Medical Terminology body systems, and diagnostic testing procedures. In the second semester, students will complete more specialized courses that cover topics such as blood collection techniques, specimen processing, and microscope use. The final semester of the program is devoted to a paid work placement in a hospital or other medical laboratory setting, where students will gain first-hand experience working alongside experienced professionals.
Graduates of the MLA program at Nait will be eligible to write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) national certification exam, which is mandatory for all MLAs in Alberta.
The program requirements
The program requires applicants to have completed high school, as well as certain prerequisite courses. Applicants must also have a strong interest in the medical field, and be able to perform well in a fast-paced environment. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam.
The program admissions process
Admission to the Nait medical laboratory assistant program is competitive and based on meeting minimum academic requirements. All applicants are required to possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with noted preference given to those who have completed particular Grade 12 courses.
All applicants must complete an entrance exam, with a minimum score of 70%. The purpose of the entrance exam is to determine an applicant’s proficiency in English, Math and Science. The entrance exam is offered at Nait on specified dates throughout the year.
It should be noted that admission to Nait’s medical laboratory assistant program does not guarantee clinical placement in a hospital laboratory.
The program costs
The program costs $1,200 for tuition and materials. There are also additional costs for books, uniforms, and other supplies.

The medical lab assistant program at Nait will start on September 3, 2019.
The program length
The Nait Medical Lab Assistant program is a two-semester, full-time diploma program. The first semester is composed of academic study and the second semester focuses on practical experience in various medical laboratory settings.

The program is offered at the Nait main campus in Edmonton as well as at the Nait destined for success Southside campus.
