Introduction

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) offers a unique physician assistant (PA) education that blends online coursework with on-campus labs and clinical rotations. The combination of these learning modalities provides UTMB PA students with the opportunity to receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for a successful career in medicine.

The UTMB PA Program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The program is also a member of the Association of Physician Assistant Programs (APAP) and the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA).

UTMB offers two tracks for PA students: the traditional track and the rural track. Both tracks prepare students to take the Physician Assistant National certifying Exam (PANCE), but the rural track provides additional coursework and clinical rotations in rural and underserved communities.

UTMB’s PA Program is post-baccalaureate, meaning that students must have completed a bachelor’s degree prior to enrolling in the program. Students who have not yet completed their undergraduate degree can still apply to the program and will be given preferential consideration if they meet certain criteria, such as having completed specific prerequisite coursework or having worked in a healthcare setting.

The PA program is a 27-month, full-time course of study that includes didactic coursework, clinical rotations, and a capstone research project. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) to earn their PA license.

The Program’s curriculum

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s Physician Assistant Program curriculum is a 27-month,108-credit-hour program that includes didactic coursework, laboratory experiences and clinical rotations. The program is designed to prepare students to provide high-quality, compassionate and culturally competent patient-centered care

The didactic portion of the curriculum is delivered online and includes coursework in the basic medical sciences, pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical medicine and medical ethics. Students also complete laboratory experiences in gross anatomy, histology, physical diagnosis and medical care skills.

The clinical portion of the curriculum consists of eight required rotations totaling 36 weeks of full-time clinical experience. Students rotate through core specialties such as family medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry and general medicine. Students also complete an elective rotation in a specialty area of their choice.

The Program’s admissions requirements

To be considered for admission into the Physician Assistant Program at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, applicants must first complete a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, although preference is given to those with a GPA of 3.4 or above. All applicants must also submit GRE scores as part of their application.

The Program’s clinical rotations

Clinical rotations are an essential part of the Physician Assistant Program at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. These rotations provide students with opportunities to learn and apply the skills they have acquired in didactic courses to real-world medical situations. Students rotate through a variety of clinical sites, including UTMB’s John Sealy Hospital, the League City Campus Clinic, the Angleton Danbury Campus Clinic, and various other community-based clinics and hospitals. Each clinical rotation is supervised by a licensed physician assistant or other qualified medical practitioner.

The Program’s research opportunities

The University of Texas Medical Branch’s Physician Assistant (PA) Program offers many research opportunities for students. The Program is one of the few PA Programs in the country that offers a formal research curriculum, and our research faculty are experienced in a variety of research areas. Students can choose to participate in faculty-mentored research projects, or they can design their own projects with the help of our experienced research staff. We also offer a PA Research Fellowship program for those who are interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine.

The Physician Assistant Student Society (PASS) and the Galveston Texas Physician Assistant Student Association (GAL PASA) are student-run organizations in The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s Physician Assistant Program. These organizations provide support and mentorship for current students, as well as networking opportunities and guidance for those interested in becoming physician assistants
