Reasons for wanting to cancel
If you are no longer employed by a company that offered Anthem health insurance as a benefit, you will need to cancel your policy. In addition, if you are Medicare-eligible, you cannot continue to have an Anthem health insurance policy. Other reasons for wanting to cancel might include loss of other forms of health insurance coverage, such as through a spouse’s employer, or simply because you can no longer afford the premiums.
How to cancel
Asking how to cancel health insurance with Anthem is like asking how to break up with a long-term significant other. It’s not going to be easy, but it can be done. Here are some steps to take to make sure you cancel your Anthem health insurance correctly.
Online
Log in to your account at anthem.com. Hover over the “My Profile” tab and select “Member Information.”
Enter your Anthem member ID number, last name and date of birth. Click on the “Continue” button.
Click on the green “Cancel My Policy” button under the “I want to…” section on the right side of the screen.
Click on the blue “Continue to Cancel Policy” button on the next page.
Select a reason for cancelling from the drop-down menu and click on the red “Cancel My Policy” button at the bottom of the page.
By phone
To cancel your Anthem health insurance coverage by phone, the first thing you’ll need to do is gather some documentation. You’ll need to have the following information on hand:
-Your Anthem policy number
-The date you would like your coverage to end
-The reason for canceling your policy
-Your Social Security Number
Once you have this information, you will need to call the customer service number for your state. You can find this number by visiting the Anthem website and selecting your state from the dropdown menu. Once you have the customer service number, call and tell the representative that you would like to cancel your policy. The representative will ask for your policy information and the date you would like your coverage to end. They will also ask for your Social Security Number to verify your identity. Once they have all of this information, they will cancel your policy and give you a confirmation number. Be sure to keep this number for your records.
Next steps
If you have Marketplace health insurance through Anthem and want to cancel your coverage, you can do so by visiting the Anthem website and signing in to your account. From there, you’ll need to find your way to the “Billing and Payments” section, and then select the “Cancel Coverage” option. You’ll be asked to provide a reason for cancelling your coverage, and then you’ll be given a confirmation number. Keep this number for your records.
Finding new health insurance
If you’re leaving your job, you may have the option to continue your health insurance through COBRA. This would allow you to keep the same health insurance plan that you had through your employer, but you would have to pay the entire premium yourself.
You can also shop for a new health insurance plan on the open market. This may be a good option if you’re healthy and don’t have any preexisting conditions. You can compare plans and prices on websites like eHealthInsurance and GoHealth.
